Arts, Science + Culture Initiative
Creating Distinctive Collaborations, Fostering Emerging Possibilities
The Arts, Science + Culture Initiative at the University of Chicago cultivates collaboration, active exchange, and sustained dialogue among those engaged in artistic and scientific inquiry within the University and beyond. The Initiative provides opportunities for scholars, students, and arts practitioners, in multiple domains, to pursue original investigations and explore new modes of artistic production and scientific inquiry. Breaking intellectual ground requires transcending disciplinary boundaries and venturing into unfamiliar territory. The Initiative’s programs are designed to spark conversations and critically engage faculty, students and the public across a broad spectrum of areas including art history, astronomy and astrophysics, biology, chemistry, cinema and media studies, computer and information science, creative writing, literature, mathematics, medicine, music, molecular engineering, physics, theater, and visual arts.
The Initiative aims to:
Foster collaborative work that breaks new ground in scientific and social science research, artistic practice, and technological endeavors;
Bridge the gap between scholars and practitioners, as well as between fields;
Introduce new perspectives through discussion with guest scholars, artists, and other practitioners;
Spark intellectual interest and wonder in faculty, students, and the broader public;
Provide opportunities for discourse and experimentation through specific programs including Pop-up-Labs, Cabinets, collaboration grants, seminars, and workshops.
The Arts, Science + Culture Initiative was established in partnership with the Office of the Provost, with the support of the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, Division of the Physical Sciences, the Humanities, and UChicago Arts, and is an affiliate of the Richard and Mary L. Gray Center for Arts and Inquiry.
